TIE DYE

Tie dye has taken over 2020. Once a trend that was super popular in the 60s and 70s, this funky and vibrant style made it's comeback last summer and is still going strong. When everyone was self quarantining this spring, we saw so many things go viral like whipped coffee, Tiger King, banana bread, TikTok and tie dying because we all needed something to fill our time with. Like did you even quarantine correctly if you didn't try one of those trends?!

When we were all working from home, our group message was flooded with Tiger King memes and our cups (or just Brett's) were filled with whipped coffees. It's truly impressive that there was/is a trendy way to quarantine. So in honor of that, we decided to try our hand at this tie dying!

It's been years since any of us have tie dyed so Brett turned to Pinterest for inspiration and tips to get the best result. We decided to try one of the traditional Japanese Shibori style folds (see tutorial here) and we are so happy with how it turned out! Instead of the typical indigo though, we opted to use a diluted version of graphite dye since that's what we had on hand.

This monochromatic, gray-on-gray tie dye is a more subdued take on traditional tie dye or Shibori. We love this look for a tablecloth or napkin because it's subtle and trendy without it being something you look back on in 10 years with regret. The gray also keeps it neutral. Incorporating tie dye linens at your wedding or event could be a cool way to commemorate one of the better parts of 2020.
